See What Our Clients Have To Say About Us!

WOW! I can describe my experience with Jill Thompson in one word – RELIEF. When I injured my back, I thought it was out of alignment and pinching a nerve. I went to a chiropractor, physician, and acupuncturist – and found no relief. I then went to a series of massage therapists who each provided temporary relief, but nothing long term. After digressing to the point where I was in constant pain and could not move my head or neck, I visited my family doctor. After taking x-rays, he sent me to Jill. My only regret is that I didn’t do that first. I could have saved months of pain and discomfort.

-Teresa Denkers

My hat’s off to the therapists in this office. I would recommend anyone who has need of therapy to come to this finely staffed office. They have helped me when no one else could. Others in my family have had the same unbelievable results. I come regularly to maintain full flexibility and good health.

Thanks you PT180 for all you do!

-Patty Hamilton

I am profoundly grateful for the physical therapy I have received at PT 180/Jill Thompson Physical Therapy. I literally could not imagine more kind, gentle, or effective therapy for my occasional severe muscle spasms or misaligned joints. These deeply compassionate, experiences therapists are obviously experts in human anatomy and they know how to carefully get to the root cause of the injury, relieve pain and restore function. Their gentle, professional confidence inspires my trusting cooperation in the healing process. Their prescribed therapeutic exercises have proved extremely effective at facilitating healing and preventing future impairment. As a bonus, they are very, very nice people. What more could you ask?

Due to various sports injuries that had gone untreated for several years, I had reached a point of constant pain. A friend recommended I see Jill for some hands on physical therapy. Jill and her staff have changed my life! I can once again perform the activities that I enjoy.

A visit to PT180 is a soothing experience that I always look forward to. Thank you!

I have been seeing Jill for over 2 years, and I could not have made it through that time as well as I have without Jill’s skilled and experienced touch. I work as a massage therapist and often work quite deeply on my clients. I end up with shoulder, elbow and wrist joints that are somewhat “locked up”. Seeing Jill every other week has allowed me to free up those joints, and, in fact, whole areas of my body, so that I can work with more ease and less pain. Her work has also allowed me to stay active in the sports that I love, well into my 60′s. Thank you, Jill, so much.

Boise, ID Certified Massage Therapist

I have been a patient of Judi and Terrie Lynne at PT180 for the last several months. My treatment was pre and post surgery for a total knee replacement. My surgeon said my recovery was “remarkable.” I was off the walker in one week (three weeks ahead of schedule) and bending my knee to 90 degrees in 2 weeks. I worked with Terrie Lynne for massage therapy and all the swelling was gone in a week. All of the practitioners at PT 180 work as a team. If I came in and had questions on of the other therapists was happy to assist me if Judi was not there. I was with each therapist 100%of the time I was there.

On one visit, I told the PT and Massage therapist about intense shoulder pain I had from my two cancer surgeries. In just a couple of treatments, my shoulder was better.

I would recommend PT 180 to anyone needing physical therapy. You will be in good hands.

Are you supposed to enjoy going to a physical therapist?

I always had the impression that going to physical therapy would be a painful experience. I now think otherwise. I have been having neck issues for some time now, I have tried it all – massages, chiropractic services, and acupuncture. Not to take away from any of those practices, they each have their purpose – but I will have to admit that I have felt more improvement in my neck working with Tori and I am only on my third visit.

I really enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. It is very comfortable and I don’t feel like I am in a hospital environment. The people who work here are so friendly and you have the feeling that you are family right away!

I love the way I feel after a session and highly recommend their services!

-DeAnn Robb

I have been the recipient of many sports & activity stresses on my body and over the years have visited many chiropractors and pt offices searching for pain relief and healing.

For the first time in many years I was completely pain free with good range of motion after several months of treatment. I stayed this way for over 1 year until I was struck from behind in a motor vehicle accident; I knew right where to go and I am on my way back thanks again to PT 180.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday. I think of you often and all the things you taught me. I am very grateful for my improved health and good share of that is due to you. I know it’s been a few years but I wanted to say thanks and let you know the way you touch people’s lives has a lasting impact. Best wishes.

After being on the “medical merry-go-round” for 7 months with moderate to severe low back pain, I was referred to Judi Grucella. In a matter of only a few visits, Judi had helped me correct my gait, improve my posture, and dramatically decreased my pain. Judi was the first person that genuinely cared about my progress and acted as my health advocate. I continue to see Judi once a week by attending her yoga/feldenkrais class and I am doing things with my body that I had not been able to do for almost a year! Judi’s calm demeanor and compassionate therapy are greatly appreciated.

You rock! It is great to walk into work and not limp or have to favor my leg. I’m doing my exercises, so I want you to know I was paying attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Should I go to a chiropractor?

A. Chiropractic care can be very helpful when recovering from a spinal joint pain/injury. The chiropractic adjustment achieves different results from a physical therapy joint mobilization. A P.T. usually nudges or stretches the joint through its normal range. This can help with alignment and pain reduction. The chiropractic adjustment stretches the joint beyond its normal range to create a neuromuscular release and change. It can create a spontaneous muscle spasm relaxation which can be temporary or permanent. If however, you are having more pain with chiropractic adjustments or need more frequent chiropractic treatments, I would discontinue chiropractic treatment and attempt an alternate treatment. I feel that 75% of the time, the P.T. treatment achieves good results with joint mobility within three visits. If improvement is not made within three visits, or I feel chiropractic treatment would achieve relief more quickly, I will frequently recommend seeing a chiropractor in conjunction with our office treatment. Unfortunately, chiropractors do not usually address the soft tissue aspects of the injury. They also rarely spend much time instructing you on postural instruction or a comprehensive exercise program to assist in your independence. A combination of both chiropractic and physical therapy may be the best rehab for some conditions. Also some insurance plans have maximum dollar amount per year for physical therapy as well as for chiropractic care. This might be the best way to stretch out your allotted money for rehab.

Q. I’ve tried physical therapy before and it didn’t work. What is different about your office?

A. There are many different types of physical therapists. Some focus predominantly on gym and exercise training and offer very little “hands on” treatment. Some focus on modalities such as heat, ice, ultrasound, electrical stimulation and whirlpool. These treatments may be effective for some people.

We have found that with our manual therapy techniques, we can achieve better results in a shorter period of time than with machines modalities, and by feeling the changes during the treatment, we learn more about the condition and your needs. We also are able to trace the injury to its source more easily.

For example: I once treated a man presenting left hip pain after a basketball game. The first treatment focused on relief of the hip pain with manual therapy, and giving his gentle stretches to improve his mobility. The pain was relieved only temporarily. At the second visit, I spent more time assessing the whole lower body and observed a significant problem with his left ankle. He had sprained his ankle in high school, but it had healed with poor positioning. This put excessive stress on his left hip causing stress and pain. After treating the left ankle, he did not require further treatment and the hip pain resolved.

Q. I am unable to perform the exercises that my physical therapist gave me because it increases my pain. My therapist told me I need to push through them to get better. Is the “NO PAIN, NO GAIN” the only option?

A. Pain is your body telling you that something is wrong. It’s a warning signal. In some cases (usually fibromyalgia or other connective tissue disorders) it is necessary to experience some pain with exercise. However, in most situations, pain should not be produced with your exercises. I can’t imagine trying to motivate yourself to do something that hurts you. With treatment prior to performing the exercises and close supervision to assure that your execution of the exercise is correct, you should have no pain with the exercise program. Sometimes supports such as towel rolls or pillows may be necessary if your muscles aren’t strong enough to perform the exercise correctly.

The most common issue is found with women (more frequently than men) performing abdominal strengthening. Usually if the abdominals are very weak, the deeper muscles (iliopsoas muscles or hip flexors) are so tight that they will dominate the exercise. Without treatment to the hip flexors, you may never achieve an adequate contraction of the abdominals and this will create lower back pain and over usage.

Buddy Up

Time once again to make that New Year’s Resolution. Many of us will resolve to get in shape, lose weight, eat better, or make some other life style change for the better. Some of us will make the same resolutions we made last year. This year, I have the added incentive to go to the gym. I have to rehabilitate a knee that I just had surgery on. My resolution includes joining a gym, just like many of you.

20 plus years ago, I was a regular at the local YMCA in San Francisco. I would hit the gym to lift weights, attend a cardio class, play some volleyball, or do any number of activities. I was there at least four days a week, often five days, and sometimes six. This went on for several years. Then one day, we bought a house in the suburbs, and started making babies. The gym routine soon came to an end.

Since then, I have had several memberships in gyms that have not worked out. I start out going on a regular basis for a few weeks, but then just stop going after a while. The last time I joined a gym, the salesman showed me around, then took me into that little room to fill out the paperwork. After I was done, I took one last look around the gym. I got a little teary eyed because I knew I would never see the inside of that gym again.

What went wrong? How come I used to be a regular gym rat, and now I can’t stick to it for more than a month? Lots of things have changed, but I still have this desire to stay in shape. What is different about me now that makes me lose my motivation? The answer is that it is not me, it is who I am hanging around with. All those years ago, I had a group of buddies that I would meet up with at the gym. We would work out together. If one of us missed a couple of days, we would call him up and find out what was going on. That buddy system worked. It was not a formal arrangement, but it was what I needed. Now, I try to go it alone. Going it alone did not work.

So this year, I am going back to what I know worked before. I am trying to find a buddy to join a gym with me, or better yet, find a buddy that is already going to a gym, and join his gym. We can set specific times to go to the gym, and make it a priority. When I start slipping, I am going to count on getting a phone call chastising me.

I have to admit, this idea is not all my own. Last week, You Docs wrote a column about using the buddy system for sticking to a diet. http://www.idahostatesman.com/2011/12/07/1906905/secret-to-successful-weight-loss.html That got me started. I also thought about it and I have been pretty good about the morning jog for several years. It is my dog that is really good about encouraging me to head out every morning, no matter what the weather. Also, I played on an adult soccer team for years. The team manager sent e-mails encouraging everybody to show up for the game every week. Obviously, I respond to encouragement, even very little encouragement.

So this might be the answer to keeping that New Year’s Resolution to improve your health. Find a buddy to join the gym with you. Have a dieting partner. Get a group of friends to start a healthy eating club. Find a walking partner. Heck, find a friend and both of you give up smoking. But it isn’t just a matter of meeting at a specific place at a specific time. It means providing support for each other. It means encouraging each other to keep on schedule, to improve every week, and be in it for the long haul. If you have a diet buddy, call each other up a couple times a week to check in. Encourage each other at all times. When you fall off the diet, start smoking, or miss a couple of work outs, a good buddy will know what it takes to get you to start all over again. If you are like me, it will only take a little encouragement.

Physical Therapy 180 began as Jill Thompson Physical Therapy in March, 2002 at our first location on Emerald St. in Boise. As we continued to grow, we adopted our new name in 2006 to reflect our increased staff. In January of 2008 we outgrew our Emerald St. office and relocated to our current, larger office at the corner of Ellen’s Ferry and State St.:br:

Our Staff

Jill Thompson, Owner and President

Jill Thompson, the owner and president of PT 180°, has been practicing physical therapy since graduating from the University of Wisconsin: Lacrosse in l981. She has focused her post graduate education on manual therapy and functional orthopedics. She studied under Greg Johnson, PT with the Institute of Physical Art and was an instructor for the Institute for Functional Orthopedics and Back Education and Training from 1986-1992.

Jill has practiced in Boise, Idaho since 1993 working with the staff at the Therapy Source for nine years before venturing on her own. Her eclectic style combines manual therapy (hands on osteopathic myofascial and joint mobilization treatment influenced by the Rolfing technique and Jones’ strain / counter strain technique) with neuromuscular re-education (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), Aston Patterning, and Feldenkrais). She has also received training in cranial/sacral treatment and TMJ (temporal-mandible joint) dysfunction. Her goal is to facilitate the patient’s progress initially using the manual therapy and a home program to control the pain, progressing with postural training and exercise to lead to independence to gain control and prevent re-occurrence.

Most patients that come to experience therapy at PT 180° ask her “what kind of therapy is this?” It’s the only kind that Jill knows. Individualized, specialized, effective.

Welcome to Physical Therapy 180˚ in Boise Idaho. We are glad you found your way to our new website. PT180˚ is all about turning your health around – 180 degrees around!

We want to let you know right now that we are not your typical physical therapy clinic. We believe it takes the full, one-on-one attention of a highly-skilled, professionally-trained physical therapist to correctly diagnose and then treat your injury. That’s why during every session you have with us you will enjoy the undivided attention of one of our therapists in a private, peaceful environment. It makes a big difference – but you don’t have to believe us. Read what our patients have to say!

If you suffer from chronic pain that has led you through a series of doctors, chiropractors, and even alternative healers, we invite you to try us and discover the healing road you’ve been looking for. We love helping people – and we’d love to have the chance to help you!

Our Approach to Healing

Treatment at our office begins with a thorough initial evaluation, which looks at not only the injury site but also problem-solves to determine the cause of the incident. We often find that some other problem area has created the vulnerability which lead to the current incident. By assessing other joints and movement patterns we are able to identify areas which have made you vulnerable.

We then treat the injury with individualized, necessary manual therapy (joint and soft tissue mobilization), home exercises (flexibility, strengthening, pain modulation or core stabilization), or posture education as needed. We continue treatment until maximum benefits have been met. Our goal is for each patient to reach a pain-free state. We are available for tune-ups if a re-injury should occur.

The only modalities we employ are the Infrared Laser, the Saunder’s Neck Traction Unit, and Electrical Stimulation. They may be used as adjunct therapy but you are never left unattended. We never bill for ice or heat treatments.

Our primary referral source has always been word of mouth. We have many physicians who have referred patients or have actually been patients themselves, but the majority of our patients are referred by family, friends or neighbors as they hear about the results. Physicians don’t always understand the variety of treatments available, and don’t always refer to physical therapy as it is not in their tool box of techniques.
